David Serry

David Serry was born in Jerusalem in 1913, to a religious family of Yemenite origin. He started his studies in "Heder" and later moved to "Tachimoni" school, where he studied engineering, physics and chemistry, but mainly he was attracted to the arts, and excelled in drawing and handicrafts. Already when he was 15 years old, he worked at the Bezalel art school in the presence of Ze'ev Raban and Zeev Gur Aryeh in copper engravings and Judaica works.
In 1930, when he was 17 years old, he purchased a Zeiss-Ikon camera in 6x9 cm format and began to photograph, first in Jerusalem and then in Tel Aviv and throughout the country. He continued to take pictures with that camera until 1936, from then onwards he mainly photographed with a Leica camera in 35 mm format.
In 1933, 1941, and 1944, Serry joined the trips of the Eretz Israel Wanderers' Association to the Dead Sea region and photographed during them.
In 1936, he opened a workshop for signage, Judaica and fine metalwork in Herzel Street In Tel Aviv.
Despite enduring a serious injury from his military service in 1948, and during his long recovery period, he continued to photograph, mainly his wounded friends and the members of the medical staff and convalescent homes where was hospitalized.
Serry was recognized as war disabled by the IDF, he worked from his home until 1975 as a craftsman. He died in 1981.
