Artist and researcher Sara Benninga presents an ongoing series of black and white paintings. In light of the political upheavals in Israel these days, Benninga’s series moves between reaction, dreaming and hoping.
“In an ongoing series of paintings, painted since 2021, I construct scenes of dense happenings and events in black and white. Painting with acrylic and charcoal, I reduce the narrative and figures to the flat surface of the canvas. Intersecting the figures and the backgrounds, I question a dominant reading of the picture plane and of the figuration: figures become patterns and black stains take on leading roles. Looking is a matter of interpretation.”
